SUMMER IN LONDON

Ah, summer in London! There’s truly nothing like it. When the sun finally decides to grace us with its presence, the whole city comes alive. Pubs spill out onto the pavements, parks are packed with picnics, and Londoners (including myself!) suddenly become obsessed with ice cream and Pimm’s.

If you’re thinking of visiting London in the summer, let me tell you – you’re in for a treat. Here’s why it’s my favourite time of year and some top things you should definitely do to enjoy it like a local.

The Parks Become London’s Back Garden

One of the best things about London is the green spaces. In summer, they turn into outdoor living rooms for everyone. Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and Hampstead Heath are my personal go-to spots. You’ll see people jogging, sunbathing, having a cheeky barbecue (where allowed!), or simply lazing with a good book.

Hampstead Heath is perfect if you fancy a swim in the famous bathing ponds — it’s very British, very refreshing, and a little chilly, but that’s part of the fun!

Rooftop Bars and Outdoor Terraces

Summer evenings in London are made for rooftop bars. The views are incredible, especially as the sun sets over the city skyline. Sky Garden, Pergola Paddington, and Frank’s Café in Peckham are some of my favourites.

Nothing beats sipping a cold drink with a breeze in your hair, high above the busy streets. And if you’re after something a bit fancy, you can’t go wrong with drinks at The Shard.

Summer Events & Festivals Galore

Londoners love a good event, and summer is packed with them. From Wimbledon Tennis Championships (even if you don’t have tickets, the atmosphere is great in the pubs!) to outdoor cinema screenings in parks like Somerset House or Greenwich, there’s always something going on.

Music lovers should check out festivals like British Summer Time in Hyde Park — huge names perform there. And don’t forget Notting Hill Carnival in August, which is an explosion of colour, music, and energy.

The Thames Comes to Life

Walking along the Thames on a sunny day is one of life’s simple pleasures. The South Bank is buzzing in summer, with street performers, pop-up food stalls, and outdoor exhibitions.

You can even hop on a Thames river cruise or take a pedal boat at Battersea Park. For a quirkier experience, try a floating bar like Barge East in Hackney Wick — perfect for a lazy afternoon.

Markets, Ice Cream, and Al Fresco Dining

Summer is the best time to explore London’s famous markets. Borough Market is a foodie’s heaven, and it’s lovely to grab some street food and eat outside. Columbia Road Flower Market is another gem, bursting with colour and lively banter.

Oh, and don’t forget the ice cream! You’ll find little gelato spots all over the city — Gelupo in Soho is my personal recommendation.

Top Tip: Be Ready for Anything

Now, a little word of advice — London weather is famously unpredictable. Even in summer, it can go from glorious sunshine to a sudden shower. Always carry sunglasses and a small umbrella. That’s the London way!

Final Thoughts

Summer in London has a special kind of magic. It’s when the city truly shows its best side — lively, laid-back, and full of hidden delights. Whether you’re strolling through a leafy park, enjoying a drink on a rooftop, or getting lost in a bustling market, you’ll see why Londoners can’t get enough of summer days.

So, if you’ve ever wondered when to visit London, trust me — summer is the time to do it.
